Ode to a MetroCard

Who clipped your corner little card?
And how was I to know
Despite the hole punched in your side
You take me where I go.

Your orange sunset tones call out
While cobalt beacon spells,
Atop a midnight magnet strip
‘insert this way’ it tells.

So slide away through skinny slot
To take us places we forgot
Far reaching bounds of boroughs end
Or just one stop to see a friend.

Contained within your golden frame
Although you seem to look the same
A mystery encoded deep
Fun pass? a day? a month? a week?

Sometimes discarded on the tracks
To sidewalks you are cast
What former travels have you known?
Through whose hands have you passed?

So do not listen when they say
That you are all alike
Mysterious powers open gates
Into the endless pike

Below our sidewalks rumbles deep
The growling stomach does not sleep
Through concrete veins flow stainless chains
Thus your ubiquity, this explains

You bring us through and all around
You are the key to underground
You’re cheery bright and always there
Of this small card, I am aware

So to you I make this proclamation
Each trip with you is a little vacation.
